Today we were going to spend the day in Luna Park, but it was 35 degrees and so we ended up at a cafe in St Kilda. It was Dayang & Tony’s first time joining us and I sketched Dayang’s retro looking digital camera. It had a nice shaded outdoor area so we didn’t fry in the sun.

Sketching at lunchtime with Alissa Duke
Shout out to Alissa Duke, who was visiting from Sydney. It was great to meet another sketcher from outer state. We sketched during my lunch break down in the grassy area near Southern Cross Station.
Gasworks Farmers Markets
Today we went to the Gasworks Farmers Market near Albert Park. I got these really tasty chocolate tarts, and blueberry tarts. Evelyn got some tasty fresh cherries.
I am always amazed by the fascinating and interesting people we meet whilst out sketching. A guy came and chatted to us as he teaches sketching and told us about some good artists and sketching books.
Here’s some of the artist’s he said inspired him:
– George B Bridgeman – books on life drawing, feature drawing etc.
– Alex Kanevsky – figure painter
– Geof Darrow – Comic book artist
– Andrew Loomis – Fun With a Pencil
Then we found this really cute little shop with jewellery and artwork called The Watchmen’s Cabin. Well did we have a field day talking to the lovely couple Janet and Paul. Janet makes beautiful jewellery, some from pieces of rocks and glass they find out and about. Paul is an amazing sketcher, and we got chatting away about sketching on location. He does alot of detailed sketches with fountain pens whilst on holidays overseas. We were like sponges soaking up his years of experience. I get so inspired talking to other like-minded creatives.
So I didn’t get as much sketching today, but we did some more as we sat at the cafe opposite called Priscilla Jones. I sketched the bonsai and a guy who’s underpants were showing. I like typography so I tend to sketch the logos and signage around as well.

Vintage galore at the Mt Buninyong winery
We decided to stop in at a winery on the way home. What a treat we found. This guy has collected a bit of everything… including a double decker bus. There were lots of odd things outside (like a kitchen sink) and hundreds of items inside, even hanging from the roof.
We did a tasting of the fortified wines and liqueurs. I think my sketching became alot looser after that : )
Brunch in Buninyong
We stopped at a lovely cafe in Buninyong. There were only a few shops and cafes. This one was lovely with hanging bottles with little flowers, and books folded in patterns. There were plenty of locals here which is always a good sign.
28 years old today!
Bunch of bikers who all want to belong
We stopped a icecream shop after the markets, as it was almost 30 degrees. There were about 20 motorcycles parked outside on the grass. Just as we started to sketch them, that group of bikes would take off and so it followed.
Old train station at Daylesford
We were headed to town but we came across an old train station in Daylesford that had lots of old yellow machinery, sleepers, and slepping quarters. What a great find!
We spent the afternoon here and chatted to quite a few locals. We found out from one of them that this machine was used to pick up the sleepers on the tracks and move them around.
Another local told us about the flea market the following day… so of course we had to come back.
Cider in a Belgium cafe (Beer & Breakfast)
I enjoy a nice cider and the occasional wine. I like that its sweet (some), fruity (pear, apple, berries) and bubbly. My favourite is Rekorderlig. I’d like to do some more packaging, especially for a wine or cider.
4 days of sketching in Daylesford/Ballarat
The first stop of our long weekend of sketching was at the Farmers Markets in Daylesford. They had lots of lovely fresh produce (which we sampled) and a little collection of farm animals that the little and ‘big’ kids could come in and pat and hold. There were chickens, ducks, pigs, lamb, goat, and some rather shy and somewhat disturbed rabbits. After an hour or so of sketching them I wanted to pat them. I really felt like I was in the country.
What’s your favourite farm animal?
